Recirquel embarks on a world tour
This year, Recirquel’s acclaimed cirque danse production Paradisum will be presented nearly 70 times across eight countries on four continents. The world tour kicks off on January 21 in Canada, a stronghold of contemporary circus, where the company will perform in the theaters of Vancouver, Québec, Montreal, and Toronto.
Directed by Bence Vági, the production—combining contemporary dance with circus arts—made its debut in 2024 at the world’s largest festival, the Edinburgh Fringe. Paradisum, selected as one of the ten most innovative artistic productions at the CINARS Biennale, will also be staged in countries including Colombia and Hong Kong.
Following performances in Madrid in December, and in Gothenburg and Budapest in January, Recirquel embarks on a major international tour with Paradisum. The company received invitations from around the world after the production’s 2024 debut at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it won widespread critical and audience acclaim, and its selection among the top ten most innovative productions at the CINARS Biennale. The Guardian described Paradisum as “physically impressive [and] undoubtedly beautiful”, noting that “every moment could be a shot for the poster campaign”.
The world tour begins with a four-week North American segment. “Canada is the stronghold of contemporary circus worldwide, the most important market for new circus. It is therefore a great honor to participate in a multi-week tour as the result of collaboration among four theaters and to be guests of these outstanding performing arts centers,” emphasized Bence Vági, artistic director of Recirquel.
The company first performed in Canada in 2016, presenting Circus in the Night at the La TOHU theater. This time, Paradisum will be performed in four major cities, for a total of 15 shows. In addition to Montreal’s La TOHU—founded by Cirque du Soleil and a globally significant center for contemporary circus—Recirquel will perform at Vancouver’s DanceHouse contemporary dance center, Québec’s Le Diamant theater, and Toronto’s TO Live – St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
After the Canadian segment, the tour continues in late February in Italy, followed by performances in France and the Netherlands. In the fall, Paradisum will be showcased in South America and Asia, including the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo (HKPAX). Altogether, the production will be staged approximately 70 times abroad this year. Hungarian audiences will next have the opportunity to see the production in April 2026 at Müpa Palace of Arts.
Paradisum explores the myth of rebirth following the silence of a destroyed world, where the means of communication is the body, and the only common language is movement. The creatures of this idyllic existence unfold from the ever-changing, swirling natural forces of the ‘fabric of life’ pulsating around them to reach the anima mundi, the world soul, through scenes of purification, birth, awakening and ritual.
