Ten thousand spectators, sold-out shows, and standing ovations – Recirquel celebrated in Canada
Recirquel’s four-week Canadian tour of Paradisum enjoyed sold-out shows and widespread acclaim.
During the tour, which began on January 21, around ten thousand spectators saw Bence Vági’s Paradisum across four major cities. The production also won over Canadian critics, who described it as a “masterfully choreographed” performance with exceptional visual artistry that “enchanted the audience.” The show was attended by renowned Canadian director Robert Lepage, who praised Paradisum as a production perfect in every aspect.
In January, Recirquel began its world tour with the highly acclaimed Paradisum. The international series of seventy performances started in Canada, the global hub of contemporary circus, with fifteen shows in Vancouver, Québec, Montreal, and Toronto. The company performed at prestigious venues including the world-famous La TOHU, founded by Cirque du Soleil, and Lepage’s Québec theater, Le Diamant.
Over the course of the four-week tour, approximately ten thousand spectators experienced Paradisum across Canada. Directed by Bence Vági, the production captivated audiences, the professional community, and critics alike. Reviews described it as a “captivating, masterfully choreographed production” that “creates exceptional visual poetry.” The national arts portal MyScena highlighted that alongside performers who transcend the limits of physics to become superhuman beings, “the richly textured set […] takes on a fantastical, almost living presence” Other critics noted that Recirquel’s visually stunning production “manages to express a fresh, poetic voice in the crowded category of international companies reworking circus arts.”
“It is a tremendous honor that we performed to sold-out audiences every night for an entire month in the homeland of contemporary circus, and that the audience rewarded our performances with long standing ovations,” emphasized Bence Vági. The company’s artistic director also expressed pride that Canadian star director Robert Lepage attended a performance of Paradisum and described it as perfect in every element. “Knowing that any of our productions could be welcomed at Le Diamant in the future is a significant recognition from one of the most sought-after theater directors of our time,” Vági added.
Following the Canadian performances, the company continues its world tour in Italy from February 21, then performs in France and the Netherlands. In the fall, Paradisum will be presented in South America and Asia, including the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo (HKPAX). Hungarian audiences will next see the production in April 2026 at the Müpa Festival Theater.
Blending contemporary dance and circus arts, Paradisum explores the myth of humanity’s rebirth following the world’s destruction, investigating how a new form of human existence might emerge in an Eden-like, utopian state. On stage, these new beings arise from the pulsating natural forces around them, passing through scenes of purification, birth, awakening, and ritual to reach the anima mundi, the “world spirit.” The production features six world-class acrobatic dancers, and its choreography, built from breathtaking contemporary circus and dance elements, elevates the cirque danse genre that Recirquel has developed over recent years.
Paradisum premiered in 2024 at the Edinburgh Fringe, the world’s largest festival, and was subsequently selected at the CINARS Biennale as one of the ten most innovative artistic productions worldwide.
